A little humor and a lot of serious reflection on what Hip Hop really represents in the eyes of the established powers in the U.S.A.

Thank you for agreeing to share your views on the situation concerning the police brutality perpetrated against the Monumental 5 at the Pete Rock / Smif n Wessun show at Tammany Hall, NYC.  I’ve rounded up some interesting questions from the fine folks on my Twitter timeline.  Let’s get started.

Have you ever had any clashes with police officers before?

“A lot. I was actually bitten by a police horse & involved in a melee w/ police where I went to Jail & the precinct was stormed by angry onlookers.”

Question 2 (via @SacredStitch )
With the tension that can build between police and patrons of any venue, what do you think can be done to ensure more  safety of the artists as well as the fans at shows?

“I have no idea. The police can pretty much do what they. Unfortunately fans & artists alike just have to follow their commands unless their ready to get busy.”

After watching the patrons clashing with police outside Tammany Hall, do you feel that the black Hip Hop community’s  reactions to the police that night should have been different than what you saw on the videos?

“I didn’t see anybody doing anything wrong. I think the police wanted to impose their will.”


Question 4 (via @RobertaHood )
Steele makes a reference at the end of the police brutality recording  (filmed by Jay Diamond) that the “hip hoppers….the current revolutionaries of this time”, are simply being mashed up by the NYPD because the police have nothing else better to do.

In your opinion are “hip hoppers” the current revolutionaries of the time, at least in the perception of the powers that be?

“Police & the aforementioned powers that be can’t control HipHop, so yes they’re afraid of it.  I don’t know if these guys are ready for Revolution.  I’m not even sure cats are ready to get pepper-sprayed, but the police know that eventually a powder-keg is gonna erupt. Its gonna have a short fuze, & ironically, the same people trying to stop it are probably gonna ignite it.”

Pete Rock and Smif-n-Wessun’s fans were brutally beaten by the NYPD last night.

Pete [+ Tek and Steele ] had their “Monumental” album release event at Tammay Hall Last night.  The same Tammany Hall NYC where I held a peaceful coat drive event with Cormega and Large Professor in February. 

But now it’s June.

The cops are out every night scouring parties.  Toward the end of the night, the police entered and maced the people in the club, deciding that it was time for event to end.  We’re talking about the event for an artist who just did a benefit song for Haiti.  These are peaceful artists/activists releasing their music but-

The cops proceeded to do what you see in the video. Beat people.  If you were there, follow Suebee’s advice and report your complaint.

According to Cynical, her friend’s wife was beaten so badly she ended up in the hospital.

Should any of you be ready to Do Something Different please let me know by emailing me with the subject line “I’m Ready.”  For example.. I bet Kraff is Ready after the cops did this to him.  This will be a long summer.  Perhaps we can Do Something Different.
